Peter Jinks

Editor

Quote: "This is the story of a young bull and an old bull..."

Many of you would know Peter Jinks as the voice of Outback Outlook, ABC’s current affairs program, which he presented from 2002 until August this year. It was just part of a long stint with the ABC, which began in 1982. Peter started his broadcasting career with 2BH in Broken Hill as an announcer in the mid-sixties. He moved to television prior to the opening of BKN 7 Broken Hill and established an advertising base in the city and district. In addition to a marketing role he was also responsible for on-air news reading and hosting a weekly hour-long local interest program.

Before his media career took flight (and you’ll have to pardon the pun) Peter pursued a passion for aviation, and in 1978 after gaining basic charter flying and instructing experience in Broken Hill he travelled to the UK to fly for an airline in Scotland.

Peter resumed flight instructing in Broken Hill in 1980 and was employed by the RFDS as a pilot for two years. He later joined Crittenden Air as a charter pilot and flying instructor.

Andrea Schulzer

Journalist

Quote: "It was the same but different."

Having lived in Vienna, Iran, United Kingdom, New Guinea and Darwin amongst other places, journalist Andrea Schulzer is still trying to work out how Broken Hill got added to the list.

Andrea came on board initially as a journalist for the Barrier Miner magazine and stayed once it was launched to work on the paper.

Feeling a bit like a fish out of water in the desert town, Andrea has been a keen sailor for years but has been finding it difficult to write many sailing yarns here in the outback.

She is the proud possessor of three harps, one of which she made herself, although finding time to play them, let alone tune them, has become a rare event.

She has found growing her large collection of orchids becomes easier with time as lack of adequate care and natural attrition in the dry climate diminishes their numbers.

Breeding birds and reading are also passions she indulges in when time permits.

With art one of the flourishing concerns in Broken Hill, Andrea has naturally gravitated towards writing about any cultural events on the city calendar. As well as being arts correspondent, Andrea takes an interest in resources, animals, travel stories, human interest stories… in fact just about anything. In fact the only story that ends up not being covered is the one you don’t tell us about… and even then we have ways and means.

Natalia Williams

Journalist

Broken Hill born and bred, Natalia completed her HSC at Broken Hill High School in 2003. With a handful of teachers commenting on how she loved to talk, Natalia set her eyes on a career in journalism.

Over the last four years, Natalia has gone from the children’s birthday hostess at McDonalds to a waitress, to receptionist at the Demo and finally, a journalist. She’s done all of this while studying a Bachelor of Communications part-time by correspondence and raising two beautiful children.

Natalia keeps sane by coming to work, visiting her parents, listening to alternative music and spending time with her top bunch of mates. Her children are her best asset.

With an interest in Australian society, Natalia believes everyone has a story … and it’s her job to tell it.

Terry Carr

Advertising Manager

The road that led Terry Carr to his job as Advertising Manager with the Barrier Miner has been long and sometimes bumpy.

Terry started his working career as a trade fitter machinist at the Zinc Mine in 1969 before moving into retail.

Born and bred in Broken Hill, Terry has a great love of sport, particularly Aussie rules (one-eyed Saints fanatic) and motorcycling. Never known for his modesty, he will enthusiastically talk about his teenage days as a local footballer with Centrals and needs no prompting to tell stories of his sojourn playing footy for Coolangatta.

Despite badly injuring a leg in a motorcycle accident in 1994, there are rumours he may get back into riding motorcycles again, albeit at a steadier pace!

Many years experience owning and managing motorcycle businesses and local hotels makes Terry the ideal choice to head up the advertising department at the Barrier Miner as we move forward to a bigger and brighter future.

Penny Smith

Advertising Consultant

Penny was born and educated in Broken Hill although she was raised on a sheep grazing property north of White Cliffs until it was sold in 1999.

Before becoming part of the team at The Barrier Miner, Penny worked in a variety of occupations, mainly specialising in retail and customer service.

Her broad experience in customer relations has proved a valuable asset for The Barrier Miner advertising department and Penny looks forward to developing and assisting her growing client base in the future.

Ryan Dwyer

Production Manager

Ryan joined the Barrier Miner team at the start of April 2007. Before he was employed, he was creating this very website in his spare time to sell to the Barrier Miner. The Barrier Miner saw Ryan's incredible, unfathomable skill in web programming and took him aboard as a web developer. Ryan also has no shame in promoting himself when writing staff profiles.

Ryan eventually started work in newspaper production. He is now the Production Manager and handles the newspaper layout and content placement. He’s also the “computer guy” who fixes any technical issues with the computer systems.

Andrew Aeschlimann

Graphic Designer

Quote: "If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you"

For Andrew, newspapers are a family affair with his mother and wife both working in the industry.

After studying electronics and sound engineering in Melbourne, Andrew turned to newspapers, working for Fairfax Community & Regional Newspapers in Melbourne’s south east suburbs. After seven years of moving around the building working in classifieds, page layout, typesetting and proof-reading, Andrew settled in the graphics department.

He originally came to Broken Hill to visit friends and go shooting on a local station, but after meeting one of the local girls, decided that the climate here was much better than in Melbourne!

With interests in photography, graphics and computing systems, Andrew brings a wide range of skills to the Barrier Miner.

Matt Davies

Graphic Designer

The path which led Matt to The Barrier Miner as a graphics designer, started with his interest in film production and editing. This later advanced into motion and still visual graphics.

Yet Matt hasn’t always been in a graphical workforce, he had been a cashier in other industries and has completed work experience in a variety of jobs, ranging from Southern Cross Television to Country Energy.

Matt also has a great love of football (the real football that is) as he plays in the local A – Grade team West Panthers as a goalkeeper.

His love for film making and graphics began at the dawn of high school when he learned how to work a camera and use editing software.

He now does filming, editing and producing parties and special occasions as outside interests.

Rebecca Byrne

Graphic Designer

Quote: "That’s not how we do it in America."

Rebecca comes from 'away'. She is an American citizen who moved to Broken Hill about two years ago. She fell in love with an Aussie and has been in Australia ever since.

Rebecca is one of The Barrier Miner's newest employees. She has a four year education in Graphic Design and Commercial Art from the University of Central Missouri. Although her education focused primarily on graphic design, she was also trained in fine arts. Having this background has helped make her more at home in this artistic town.

Rebecca says when moving from America to Australia there were many things she has had to grow accustomed to. A few of these include spelling, measurements, accents and words she just doesn't understand. Although there are many differences Rebecca says she loves living in Australia. She says, "It's like an amazing adventure!"

She feels right at home in Broken Hill, coming from a small town herself. She loves living here and says the people from Broken Hill are always friendly. Rebecca has visited many other beautiful places in Australia but says she still loves the town of Broken Hill.

Sam Kernaghan

Accounts Manager

Quote: "Or-i' (pom for alright)"

Sam was born in the UK in the picturesque city of Bath. He then moved to Windsor just outside London– and he says he did have tea with the Queen, “She is a good mate of mine.”

Educated at the finest University in England, Oxford Brooks, Sam has a broad knowledge of Business, Marketing and Advertising.

He travelled around Australia after University and believes this is such a wonderful country with so many exciting places to see.

Sam fell in love with a local girl and hasn’t looked back since – and says he loves living in Broken Hill.

With a passion for football (go Everton) – he will defend them till the end because they’re the best team in the world. He also supports England when they play…whatever sport.

Ed note: we haven’t the heart to tell Sam about the Ashes and cricket World Cup.
